Fluid retention

Fluid retention occurs when the body cannot get rid of excess water. It can be caused by medication, hormonal imbalances and even dehydration.  As a result of fluid retention, there may be some swelling of the body especially in the legs, ankles, hands, feet and abdomen. Bowen Therapy and Massage can effectively help treat fluid retention. And here are some tips on what you can do at home to relieve symptoms:

  • Decrease your salt intake
  • Increase your water intake
  • Eat foods that contain water (celery, lettuce, cucumbers)
  • Eat fresh fruits (especially citrus and melons)
  • Eat low-fat dairy products (calcium)
  • Drink herbal teas
  • Exercise
  • Decrease caffeine and alcohol intake
  • Elevate feet when resting
  • Get your liver tested by your GP before you increase your water intake
